But a backup is not enough because:
always done manually with almost all the software and in addition on the same support.
What has to be done:
- basic actions:
- Make automatic backups if the software allows it.
- Duplicate files on external media automatically (simple scripts do it very well)
like on a USB card or an external drive
- advanced actions:
- Backups and recordings on a NAS server with RAID duplication
- rent a storage space at a datacenter and make your Nextcloud
- I put the files directly on a cloud folder which is directly synchronized with my storage space.
(Dropbox, Mega, Google Drive, Tresorit, pCloud, Spideroak One, Microsoft OneDrive, Box, Amazon Drive, MediaFire...)
If you lose files on your computer:
Do not install a program or update.
Stop all work in progress.
Before you start your own data recovery:
- Never install the data recovery software on the disk system that contains your data.
Install the software on another partition, otherwise some of the data you are looking for would be irretrievably overwritten.
- Never save your new data on the partition that contains your lost data.
Guaranteed overwriting of your old data!
- Do not change the structure of your score, size or format.
Switching from a PC (NTFS) format, Mac (HFS +) to a Linux (EXT4) would be fatal for all your data, without exception.
- Never use data recovery software if your hard drive is in SMART ERROR.
You would only aggravate the failure and create new bad sectors by the hundreds.
But:
The best thing is to call on a computer specialist.
